The treatment uses your own blood combined with a wound-healing material, injected into the thinning areas of your scalp. Here is the whole sequence, start to finish.
The visit starts the way a routine blood test would. A small sample is taken from your arm and spun in a centrifuge to separate out the platelet-rich plasma, the fraction of blood that carries the growth factors your body already uses to repair tissue.
That plasma is combined with extracellular matrix, a wound-healing material made by ACell. On its own, plasma is absorbed quickly. The matrix is what gives the growth factors a scaffold to sit in, and working out that formulation is the part Dr. Prasad developed.
The combined material is injected into the thinning areas of the scalp after the area has been numbed. The treatment itself takes place in a single appointment, and most people return to normal activity the same day without bandaging or a recovery period.
Nothing visible happens on the day. The intent is to support follicles that have thinned so that they produce thicker hair again, and that plays out over months rather than weeks. Most patients are treated once or twice rather than on an ongoing schedule.
The part Dr. Prasad worked out is the formulation: how the extracellular matrix and the plasma are combined and where they are placed. Amiya Prasad, M.D., F.A.C.S. is a prominent multi-specialty, board-certified cosmetic and reconstructive surgeon who has been in practice in New York City and Long Island for over 20 years. He has helped people with hair loss throughout his career, beginning with surgical hair transplantation, and he is the founder of TrichoStem Hair Regeneration Centers.
Dr. Prasad completed his medical training at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, followed by specialty training through the University of Texas in Houston and Galveston and at Baylor College of Medicine. He is board-certified in facial cosmetic surgery as well as breast, body and extremity surgery, and he is a Fellow of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery and the American College of Surgeons.
His work with hair loss grew out of an unrelated part of his surgical practice. Dr. Prasad had extensive experience applying extracellular matrix, or ECM, made by ACell, Inc. to support healing in surgical procedures such as facelift surgery. In the course of that work he observed that patients treated with ECM were also growing thicker hair in the treated areas. That observation, combined with his background in hair transplant surgery and a careful review of his own patient data, led him to develop the TrichoStem Hair Regeneration System in 2011.
The system is derived from stem cell-based wound healing technology, and Dr. Prasad's insight into the formulation and application of extracellular matrix has made it one of the most sought-after non-surgical treatments for pattern hair loss. Outcomes and expectations
Hair loss is a field with a long history of overstatement. This section is deliberately plain about where the line sits between what is reported and what is guaranteed.
TrichoStem publishes that most patients are treated in one to two sessions and that patients report thicker hair lasting three to five years or longer. These are the practice's own reported outcomes across its patient population, not a projection for any individual.
Age, sex, how early the thinning began, how far it has progressed, the medications you take and your general health all influence what is realistic. Two people with the same visible pattern can reasonably be given different advice.
This is not a cure for pattern hair loss and it does not create hair where follicles are entirely gone. Areas that have been completely bare for many years are unlikely to respond, and that will be said plainly at the consultation rather than after payment.

The treatment is aimed at follicles that have thinned but are still producing hair. A hair transplant relocates hair you already have. Follicles are taken from the back of the scalp, either as a strip or through follicular unit extraction, and placed where hair has been lost. It is surgery, it needs a donor area that has to heal, and the total amount of hair on your head does not increase.
TrichoStem Hair Regeneration is not surgery and does not move hair. There is no incision, no donor site and no graft. The intent is to support the follicles you still have so that thinning hair produces thicker hair. Nothing is visible on the day of treatment, and nothing much is visible in the first weeks.
