The physician
Amiya Prasad, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Founder of TrichoStem Hair Regeneration Centers, and the surgeon who developed the protocol.
Amiya Prasad, M.D., F.A.C.S. is a prominent multi-specialty, board-certified cosmetic and reconstructive surgeon who has been in practice in New York City and Long Island for over 20 years. He has helped people with hair loss throughout his career, beginning with surgical hair transplantation, and he is the founder of TrichoStem Hair Regeneration Centers.
Dr. Prasad completed his medical training at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, followed by specialty training through the University of Texas in Houston and Galveston and at Baylor College of Medicine. He is board-certified in facial cosmetic surgery as well as breast, body and extremity surgery, and he is a Fellow of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery and the American College of Surgeons.
His work with hair loss grew out of an unrelated part of his surgical practice. Dr. Prasad had extensive experience applying extracellular matrix, or ECM, made by ACell, Inc. to support healing in surgical procedures such as facelift surgery. In the course of that work he observed that patients treated with ECM were also growing thicker hair in the treated areas. That observation, combined with his background in hair transplant surgery and a careful review of his own patient data, led him to develop the TrichoStem Hair Regeneration System in 2011.
The system is derived from stem cell-based wound healing technology, and Dr. Prasad's insight into the formulation and application of extracellular matrix has made it one of the most sought-after non-surgical treatments for pattern hair loss. He established TrichoStem Hair Regeneration Centers to make the treatment available beyond his New York practices, and he sees patients at the Vienna, Virginia office as well as in Manhattan and Garden City, Long Island.
How TrichoStem began
The treatment exists because of something noticed in an unrelated operation
This is the actual sequence of events, and it explains why the protocol looks unlike anything else offered for hair loss.
Before hair loss
A surgeon working with wound-healing material
Long before any of this concerned hair, Dr. Prasad was using extracellular matrix, a material made by ACell, to support healing in surgical procedures including facelift surgery. He accumulated extensive experience with how the material behaves in tissue, which is the background that everything else depends on.
The observation
Hair that thickened where it was not supposed to
Patients treated with extracellular matrix were growing thicker hair in the treated areas. It was incidental to the reason the material was being used. The straightforward response would have been to note it and carry on. Instead he treated it as a lead worth following, and cross-referenced it against his own experience performing hair transplant surgery.
2011
The TrichoStem Hair Regeneration System
Working from that observation and a careful review of his patient data, Dr. Prasad developed a system derived from stem cell-based wound healing technology, combining extracellular matrix with platelet-rich plasma drawn from the patient. The formulation and the way it is applied are the part he worked out, and the part that distinguishes it from a plain platelet-rich plasma injection.
The centres
Beyond the New York practices
TrichoStem Hair Regeneration Centers were established to make the treatment available beyond his Manhattan and Long Island practices. Patients across Northern Virginia and the Washington, DC area are now seen at the Vienna office at Tysons Medical West, without needing to travel to New York for an assessment.
Philosophy
Thinking outside the box, meant literally
Dr. Prasad describes his approach to hair loss as thinking outside of the box, and the phrase is meant literally rather than as a slogan. For decades the standard answer to pattern hair loss was to block DHT with medication or to move hair surgically from the back of the scalp to the front. Both answers work within a fixed frame: the hormone, or the transplant.
The TrichoStem approach came from stepping outside that frame and asking a different question. If a material designed to signal wound healing could reactivate tissue after surgery, could the same signalling wake up hair follicles that had thinned but had not yet been lost? That question came from surgical practice rather than from hair loss literature, and it is the reason the protocol looks different from what most patients have already tried.
In practice this means the consultation starts with the scalp in front of him rather than with a product. Dr. Prasad assesses the pattern, the density, the age of onset and what the patient has already used, then explains plainly whether this treatment is a reasonable option, whether something else would serve them better, or whether waiting and monitoring is the honest recommendation.
The question was not how to block a hormone or where to move a graft. It was whether a follicle that had thinned could be signalled to behave differently.
